Granting microphone access

How to allow Mutter to hear you, and how to fix it if the mic isn’t working.

Mutter needs macOS Microphone permission to transcribe your voice. The app asks the first time you dictate. To check or change it:

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
  2. Turn Mutter on.
The mic shows allowed but Mutter still can’t hear you? This usually happens right after an app update. Toggle Mutter off and back on in that list (or remove it with – and re-add it with +), then quit and reopen Mutter. See Dictation stopped working after an update.

In Private mode your audio never leaves your Mac. The microphone is live only while you hold your push-to-talk key — Mutter never records in the background.
