Changing your push-to-talk hotkey

Pick the key or key-combo you hold to dictate, and a separate one for Intent mode.

Open Settings → Hotkeys (the gear in the menu bar, or ⌘,). You can set:

  • Dictate — hold to talk; release and clean text lands at your cursor.
  • Intent mode — hold to “think out loud”; Mutter drafts the finished email, message, or list to review. It can’t be the same key as Dictate.

A combo (a modifier plus a key, like ⌃⌥ Space) is the most reliable. You can also choose a single modifier such as Right Option, or a function key. A lone modifier like Control by itself can’t be a global shortcut.

If your hotkey doesn’t trigger dictation, the most common cause is missing Accessibility permission — global hotkeys need it.
